Ms Amerasinghe is a full time Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon based at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in Glaucoma and Cataract Surgery.
She is one a leading experts in Glaucoma in the UK employing the latest medical and surgical techniques including lasers (SLT), conventional glaucoma surgery (tube and trabeculectomy) and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). She is an expert complex cataract surgeon using the latest innovative techniques.
The role of President of the UK & Eire Glaucoma Society, is a testament of the respect Ms Amerasinghe within the Glaucoma Speciality. She is working hard to promote the exchange of knowledge between glaucoma specialists; stimulating glaucoma research; promoting the sub-speciality to trainees and protecting the interests of those touched by glaucoma.
Ms Amerasinghe has been performing cataract and glaucoma surgery for more than 20 years having done thousands of procedures with a very low complication rate.
She graduated from the Imperial College School of Medicine at St Mary’s, London, in 1998.
She trained on the Wessex Ophthalmology Rotation where she additionally completed an Advanced Speciality (Glaucoma) Training Opportunity (ASTO) between Southampton and Portsmouth Hospitals.
Subsequently, she undertook a further 2 years advanced training as a Clinical Glaucoma Research Fellow at the world renowned Singapore National Eye Centre, and a Clinical Glaucoma fellowship at the internationally acclaimed Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.
Ms Amerasinghe’s research projects include a large study looking into the Heritability of Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma which was a joint project with Singapore National Eye Centre and the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College of London. Recently she authored the British Medical Journal Best Practice of Primary Open Angle Glaucoma 2023. Ms Amerasinghe is currently the principal investigator of a large multi-centre research project looking at Real-World data into Open Angle Glaucoma Management.
The importance of teaching and training is a passion, both locally, including trainees and allied healthcare professionals to international peers; for example, training on the West African College of Surgeons/Moorfields Trabeculectomy Course, Ghana and The Alcon Basic Glaucoma Surgical Course, Barcelona.This is reflected in consistently high feedback scores Ms Amerasinghe receives.
She has won academic scholarships and prizes throughout her career as well publishing many papers and reviewing for the major Ophthalmology journals.
Ms Amerasinghe is invited regularly to speak at national and international meetings especially on Angle Closure and Surgical treatment of Glaucoma.
She can be found on the General Medical Council's Specialist register for Ophthalmology.
Ms Amerasinghe recently undertook the ultimate winter sports endurance challenge Everest in Alps 2023, to raise money and awareness for Glaucoma. She is often invited to do media interviews on aspects of eyecare and glaucoma. These have included Mail on Sunday, Sky News, ITV, BBC Radio and others.
She is happily married with three children.
